If you have a missing tooth, you might wonder if straightening your teeth is still an option. You want a confident smile, but feel unsure how clear aligners could work with the gap. This is a question our team at Shine Dental hears all the time.

In many cases, you can get Invisalign® treatment even if you have 1 or more missing teeth. All of our treatments are customized to your unique dental situation, and a missing tooth can usually be managed as part of your overall plan.

How Invisalign® Works with Gaps in Your Smile

Invisalign® clear aligners are designed to gradually move your teeth into their pre-planned positions. When a tooth is missing, the treatment can be adapted in a couple of ways. It can straighten your existing teeth while carefully managing the empty space for a future tooth replacement.

When you have a gap, your other teeth naturally try to fill it. You might notice your teeth tilting or drifting over time, which can change your bite and the look of your smile. Invisalign® can help correct this shifting or prevent it from happening while you plan for a tooth replacement.

Close the Gap

For small gaps, the aligners may be designed to move the neighbouring teeth closer together. This can sometimes close the space completely, and in some cases, this approach can help you avoid the need for a dental implant or bridge later on.

Save the Space

If you plan to get a dental implant, Invisalign® can actually be a great first step. The aligners can hold the space open, which helps prevent other teeth from shifting into it. This creates some room for a future implant, which helps the final restoration look and feel as natural as possible.

Your Treatment Plan for Missing Teeth and Invisalign®

Your journey may begin with a detailed 3D digital scan of your mouth. This scan creates a precise model of your teeth, which is used to map out every step of your treatment. Our team tailors your plan to your specific smile goals, whether that involves closing a gap or preparing for a restoration.

Hide Gaps During Your Treatment

You may not want to show a gap in your smile while your teeth are shifting. Your aligners can include a tooth-coloured material placed in the empty space inside the aligner, making the gap much less noticeable during your treatment.

Pair Invisalign® with Tooth Replacement Options

Invisalign® treatment often coordinates with other dental work, like implants or a dental bridge. By aligning your teeth first, you can create a strong, stable foundation for these restorations. This coordination often helps improve the long-term function and appearance of your entire smile.

Invisalign® Before a Dental Implant

The most common approach is to complete your Invisalign® treatment before getting a dental implant, as straightening your teeth helps create the right spacing for the new tooth. It helps the final implant crown fit perfectly between the neighbouring teeth for a seamless result.

Invisalign® with an Existing Implant

If you already have a dental implant, don’t worry! You may still be a candidate for Invisalign®. Dental implants are fixed in the jawbone and cannot be moved. Your treatment plan can be designed to move your natural teeth around the implant, bringing them into proper alignment.

What Invisalign® Can and Can’t Do

Clear aligners are effective for correcting many common dental concerns. You can use them to fix crowded or crooked teeth and improve bite issues like overbites or underbites. For those with missing teeth, Invisalign® can also prevent nearby teeth from drifting into the empty space.

Understand the Limits

It is important to know what clear aligners can’t do. They cannot move a dental implant or act as a replacement for a missing tooth. If you have an existing dental bridge, it may also affect how your teeth can be moved, which would be discussed during your consultation.

Find the Path Forward for Your Smile

Invisalign® can be an excellent choice if you are missing 1 or a few teeth and want a straighter smile. Our team is here to give you a comprehensive assessment to determine whether this is the right path for you.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign®?

Good candidates for this treatment typically have healthy gums and teeth, free from major decay or gum disease. It is also important that you are committed to the process. This means wearing your aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day and attending your check-up appointments to monitor your progress.

What Does a Consultation Include?

During a consultation with our team, we would love to talk with you about your cosmetic goals and answer all your questions. We’ll also perform a thorough check of your dental health, which helps our dental team create a personalized plan for you. Our goal is always for you to leave with a clear understanding of your next steps.
