Dental Crowns in Winnipeg

Dental crowns help patients preserve and strengthen their natural teeth. At Shine Dental, we offer metal, porcelain, and porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns to help our patients restore their smile and improve their oral health.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are hollow, artificial teeth used to cover and protect damaged or decayed teeth. They are placed on top of natural teeth and can only be used when part of the natural tooth is intact.

Why You Might Need A Dental Crown

Dentists recommend dental crowns when a natural tooth is healthy enough to stay in your mouth, but too damaged, decayed, or weakened to offer the strength and stability needed to withstand bite forces. Dental crowns may be used:

  • After root canals

  • For dental bridges

  • To protect cracked teeth

  • To restore worn-down teeth

  • In cosmetic dentistry, to cover severely stained, crooked, or discoloured teeth

When you visit Shine Dental, our team will help you determine if a dental crown is the right restorative dental procedure for your tooth and for your unique situation.

Types Of Dental Crowns We Offer In Winnipeg

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns have a natural tooth-like appearance. Porcelain is somewhat weaker than other materials, so porcelain crowns will typically not be used on your back teeth where bite forces are stronger and chewing occurs more frequently. We offer porcelain crowns at our clinic.

Metal Crowns

Metal crowns are typically made of gold or gold alloys. These crowns are incredibly strong, but they do not look like natural teeth. Metal crowns are most often used on molars, where they’re useful for resisting bite force. Back teeth are also less visible, so the metallic look of the crowns is less of a concern.

Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal Crowns

The best of both worlds, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer the stability and durability of metal with the natural look of porcelain. Our porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can be used on any tooth.

What To Expect During Your Dental Crown Procedure

Step 1 - Consultation & Evaluation

Before we begin the process of crafting a custom dental crown for your tooth, we complete a thorough examination to determine if a dental crown procedure is right for you. We may take X-rays, check for cavities, and check gum health before recommending a dental crown.

Step 2 - Tooth Preparation

First, we will give you a local anesthetic to numb the tooth. Your tooth is then filed down to make room for the crown while preserving the tooth root.

Step 3 - Custom Crown Design & Impression

We will then take impressions of your filed-down tooth to create a custom crown. This custom crown will take some time to prepare; in the meantime, we will place a temporary crown over your filed-down tooth.

Step 4 - Final Crown Placement

The next time you visit, we will remove your temporary crown and place the custom, permanent crown. We will ensure that the crown looks and feels right for you; if it does, we cement the crown into place.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns

  • On average, a dental crown will cost anywhere from $900-$1300 in Winnipeg. Several factors impact the cost of a dental crown, including:

    • The materials used for the crown

    • Where the crown will be placed

    • The condition of the tooth

  • Dental crowns are a restorative tool that protects your healthy, natural tooth from further damage. Dental bridges are a restorative appliance that replaces one or more teeth that have fallen out or been extracted.

Dental bridges use dental crowns as anchors; one or two teeth on either side of a gap caused by missing teeth are filed down to place the dental bridge, which contains crowns that secure the bridge to your natural teeth

  • The average lifespan of a dental crown depends on the materials that are used:

    • Porcelain crowns last for 5-15 years

    • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns last 10-15 years

    • Gold crowns can last for decades

To help extend the life of your dental crowns, proper oral health care is critical. Brush twice a day, floss once a day, and visit your dentist regularly:  Every 6 months for cleanings, and at least once a year for a dental exam.

  • We make placing dental crowns as painless as possible. We thoroughly numb the area where the crown will be placed before filing down your tooth and placing the crown, and offer advice on how to reduce pain in the days after the procedure. It is normal to experience minor discomfort post-procedure, and it can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.

  • The answer depends on the type of crown you get. Porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns will match the look of your natural teeth. Metal crowns, on the other hand, match the colour of the metal they are made out of. This is one of the reasons why metal crowns are typically placed on back teeth.
